Cristóbal Colón: ¿Descubrimiento o Colonización?
- SPAN 3070 -
This artifact is a paper written for the course SPAN 3070 - The Hispanic World: Spain. This paper analyzed the history of Spain during the years of the reconquest (or “La Reconquista”) and Christopher Columbus’ contributions to the colonization of the Americas. One of the main purposes of this paper was determining whether or not Columbus’ trip to the Americas was considered a discovery or colonization. This paper allowed me to explore Spain’s early history and culture and pushed me to question and rethink what I knew of Christopher Columbus’ legacy. It also encouraged me to look at things from a different perspective, which is an important and necessary skill in the healthcare field. In addition, this paper gave me the opportunity to improve my Spanish writing proficiency, especially in the context of Spanish history. Writing this paper has prepared me for future situations in healthcare where I will need to approach patient care, cases, decision making, and health disparities with a variety of perspectives in order to provide the best care to my future patients.

The Myth of the Model Minority
- SOC 4600 -
This artifact is a presentation for the course Race and Ethnicity which analyzes the book titled The Myth of the Model Minority by Rosalind S. Chou and Joe R. Feagin. This book explores the stereotype that Asian Americans are considered the “model minority” and therefore are not affected by racism. Additionally, this book addresses the consequences that Asian Americans face due to this false stereotype including pressure to conform to societal standards and mental health challenges. Participating in this group presentation greatly increased my cultural competence and humility as I was able to examine the expectations that society has placed on Asian Americans and the harsh impacts it has on the minority group as a whole. Having this deeper understanding of racism in America, especially for Asian Americans, has better prepared me for a career in healthcare where people come from many different cultures and backgrounds. This presentation also emphasized the importance of respecting people’s culture and values which will allow me to provide the most inclusive care possible.
